MISSION STATEMENT
Bringing Awareness to Support and Influence Change (B.A.S.I.C) is a student organization dedicated to raising awareness on issues surrounding poverty in Timmins, Ontario, and to help in providing individuals and families with access to their basic needs.
MANDATE
As an organization, we want to begin by bringing awareness to our community members on poverty and the importance of coming together to help individuals and families meet their basic needs. With the help of partnerships, we are aiming towards creating a safe environment where individuals will have access to food, warmth, and support.
WORKING WITH THE YO! MOBILE
Mario Dussault has been dreaming of a way to feed the city's most vulnerable residents when they are in need of food. Mario drives a black painted mini bus every Friday and Saturday between 7pm – 1 am in Timmins, Ontario. Mario has expressed the importance of providing this service as most soup kitchens are closed on weekends leaving many homeless individuals and families without food until Monday morning.
The Yo! Mobile is made up of a group of people who care about the needs of others, and who are willing to give their time and distribute food and clothing to those that visit the bus. It is surprising to know how many people live in alleys during the night and struggle to make ends meet in Timmins, Ontario. The little black bus is equipped with a small pantry to help feed the people who are hungry, thirsty, and cold. This built-in pantry is where they store noodles, mitts, hats, and winter jackets, etc. It's also important to note that there are men, women and children of all ages who utilize this service; for instance a mother and her 4-6 year old children were trying to track down the Yo! Mobile so they didn’t have to go to bed hungry. The Yo! Mobile can always use volunteers!
